De Parade, ’s‑Hertogenbosch: a renewed and future‑proof city square

From diseased horse chestnuts to a green, vibrant and sustainable heart of the city centre

De Parade in ’s‑Hertogenbosch has been completely redeveloped after the diseased horse chestnut trees had to be removed. A total of 122 climate‑resilient elms and limes have been planted, supported by the AirMax aeration system from GreenMax to stimulate healthy root growth. The trees have since grown into fine specimens that bring shade, atmosphere and vibrancy back to the square.

Vibrant city square

De Parade is one of the most well‑known and atmospheric squares in the city centre of ’s‑Hertogenbosch. Located in the centre, there is almost always something happening, from large events to lively hospitality venues. With the impressive St John’s Cathedral as a backdrop and surrounded by characteristic, historic buildings, De Parade is a special place. Here, history, culture and conviviality come together naturally.

Disease in horse chestnuts

The horse chestnut trees present were affected by various diseases and pests. In addition, the paving of the square was also due for renewal. Furthermore, the planned construction of a theatre meant that a complete redesign of the square was scheduled. Ultimately, all the trees were removed, as they were too diseased to be saved.

Climate‑resilient tree species

Trees are characteristic of the square and therefore a great deal of attention was given to planting new trees. High demands were placed on the trees to be used on De Parade. They needed to establish quickly, be disease‑free and heat‑resistant. The choice therefore quickly fell on a mix of elms and lime trees. There are now 122 trees in total.

Extra oxygen for the trees

In built‑up environments, many young trees experience problems with drought and lack of oxygen. To prevent this in the newly planted trees, the AirMax aeration system from GreenMax was applied. This system actively brings oxygen to the deeper soil layers, allowing the roots to breathe better and develop more effectively. This increases the success rate of the trees.

Redevelopment of the square

The paving on De Parade was replaced with characteristic Swedish granite setts. During the works, the trees were temporarily placed in corten steel containers, allowing the public to already get a good impression of the final result. At the same time, this approach ensured that the square maintained a neat and finished appearance during the works. As a result, there was less time pressure on the planning, as the surroundings remained aesthetically attractive despite the ongoing construction activities.

Attractive and lively city square

The trees on De Parade are developing well and provide cooling shade during warm days. Over the years, they have grown into large, healthy trees that add more atmosphere and quality to the square. As a result, Den Bosch has regained an attractive and lively city square. Residents and visitors are pleased that beautiful trees have once again been planted on the square!
