Sustainability, climate adaptation and biodiversity at the forefront

De Plantage in Geldermalsen (Meteren) is a large‑scale new housing development where living, landscape and water management come together. The area includes approximately 1,500 homes and has been designed with a strong reference to the Betuwe landscape, such as orchards, avenues and water‑rich structures. The development has been carried out in phases under the direction of the Municipality of West Betuwe, with significant attention given to the design of the public space. Within the plan, sustainability, climate adaptation and biodiversity are central, including through the installation of wadi systems and varied greenery. De Plantage therefore represents a contemporary residential area with a distinct identity.

Water reservoirs for optimal water supply

Multiple tree and plant species have been planted and all homes are provided with hedges. This reduces heat stress, creates an attractive street scene and promotes biodiversity within the residential area. To ensure that young trees establish well and develop new roots before drying out, the trees have been equipped with GreenMax water reservoirs. These provide a concentrated water supply directly to the root zone. Van Doorn Buitenruimte carefully installed the water reservoirs, ensuring that the trees remain healthy and well‑maintained even during warm summers.

Immediate attention to tree care

De Plantage in Geldermalsen demonstrates how immediate attention has been given to the health and development of young trees at the time of planting. By ensuring sufficient water supply from the outset, drought stress is prevented and the success rate is increased. This contributes not only to strong and sustainable planting, but also to a greener, climate‑resilient and attractive living environment.
