Preventing root heave in new tree planting projects at De Laakse Tuinen

During the development of De Laakse Tuinen in Vathorst, the municipality opted for a future-proof tree pit design with Tree Root Guiding, AirMax and water reservoirs from GreenMax. These solutions guide roots into deeper soil layers, improve the oxygen supply and support a healthy start for young trees. More than 9 year after installation, there is no sign of root heave and the trees are developing exceptionally well.

De Laakse Tuinen is a new residential area in Vathorst. The location borders the Laak river, the polder and the to-be-developed Westerpark. Wide green avenues and attractive canals connect the neighbourhood to the water and give it a calm, open character. Small boats are moored along the banks, and large trees complete the picture between the embankments. During the development of the new residential area, careful consideration was given from the outset to preventing root heave in the future. The tree species can cause damage to the paving if no measures are taken.

In 2017, the Tree Root Guiding (TRG) root guidance system was applied to prevent tree roots from lifting the paving. This system directs young roots downwards in a controlled manner, allowing them to continue growing at a safe depth without causing damage. In addition, the trees were equipped with GreenMax water reservoirs, ensuring they received the right amount of water during the first years for a healthy start and strong root development. The AirMax aeration system was also applied to provide the trees with additional oxygen deeper in the tree pit.

The Municipality of Amersfoort made a smart, future-proof choice in 2017. Nearly 10 years later, there is still no sign of root heave and the trees are developing well. As a result, De Laakse Tuinen is beautifully green, while cyclists, pedestrians and playing children do not have to worry about tripping hazards!
