International Bus Station, Maastricht (2019): future-proof design with root guidance

Tree Root Guiding ensures a safe infrastructure at a busy transport hub

In 2020, the Municipality of Maastricht, together with international bus operators, opened the Netherlands’ first International Bus Station near the central station, with connections to 83 European destinations. In 2019, Japanese ornamental cherries were planted in the green strip next to the station, with Tree Root Guiding (TRG) applied to prevent future root heave. More than 7 years later, the paving remains completely level and safe.

Project details

  • Location: International Bus Station, Maastricht (The Netherlands)
  • Solution: Tree Root Guiding (TRG)
  • Year: 2019
  • Number of years free from root damage: 7
  • Tree species: Japanese ornamental cherry (Prunus ‘Umineko’)
  • Public authority: Municipality: Maastricht

Safe infrastructure for all road users

Nearly 7 years later, a visit was made to the International Bus Station. The paving remains in excellent condition and there is no sign of root heave. This ensures that the public space is not only aesthetically appealing, but above all safe, as tripping hazards caused by root heave are prevented. In 2019, Japanese ornamental cherries were planted in the green strip separating the bus station from the Meerssenerweg. The International Bus Station is a place where public transport, cyclists and cars come together. It is a busy traffic hub, making a safe and well-designed infrastructure essential.

Tree Root Guiding keeps the paving safe and intact

Directly at the time of planting the Japanese ornamental cherries, careful consideration was given to the tree pit. Tree Root Guiding (TRG) root guidance panels were applied to prevent future root heave. This innovative root guidance system directs tree roots downwards in a controlled manner, ensuring they continue to grow at a safe depth and have no opportunity to lift the paving. The panels extend slightly above ground level so that the roots do not grow over the panel.
