Ronda del General Mitre, Barcelona

In Barcelona, GreenMax water reservoirs have been installed along the Ronda del General Mitre. Pinus canariensis and magnolias are thus protected against drought, especially on an embankment where water previously drained away. The water reservoirs retain water in the root zone, allowing the trees to grow healthily with efficient water use. Residents and the municipal maintenance service clearly see the results: the trees are thriving, even during extremely hot summers above 35°C.

In Barcelona, our water reservoirs have been installed along the Ronda del General Mitre, a major traffic route in the city. Pinus canariensis and magnolias have been planted along the pavement. The pine trees are intended to grow tall and narrow to reduce traffic noise, while the magnolias provide an attractive streetscape.

The pines were planted on a small elevation, causing water to drain away initially. It was a difficult location for trees to grow well. Thanks to the use of water reservoirs, this problem has been solved, as the reservoirs retain water at the base of the trunk. In addition, no water is lost and the trees can now grow optimally with relatively low water consumption. An additional advantage is that dogs can no longer dig in the planting beds, which used to happen regularly.

Both local residents and the City of Barcelona’s maintenance department are enthusiastic. They notice that the trees are suddenly thriving, even during a hot summer in which temperatures in the city exceeded 35 degrees Celsius!
