Onderwijsboulevard, ’s‑Hertogenbosch: growing green campus zone

Trees get a strong start with water reservoirs and support the municipality’s green ambitions

The Onderwijsboulevard in ’s‑Hertogenbosch is a campus zone where education, urban development and greening come together. In 2018, trees were planted here with water reservoirs from GreenMax, which ensured targeted water supply and a healthy start for the planting. The water reservoirs have since been removed and the trees have grown into mature specimens that provide shade and contribute to the municipality’s green ambitions.

Greening the campus zone

The Onderwijsboulevard in ’s‑Hertogenbosch is an important street and area in the Paleiskwartier, close to the Central Station. Various educational institutions, such as Avans University of Applied Sciences, HAS green academy and Koning Willem I College, as well as offices, are located here. It functions as a central campus zone with, among other things, schools, sports facilities and learning environments, designed to connect education, innovation and urban development within a single modern area. The municipality of ’s‑Hertogenbosch has ambitions to green the area in order to strengthen climate adaptation and biodiversity.

New planting equipped with water reservoirs

At Hofplein on the Onderwijsboulevard, along Vlijmseweg, a beautiful green public space was created in 2018 with corten steel retaining walls. The trees planted there were equipped with water reservoirs from GreenMax. These water reservoirs help new planting get off to a good start in the first two to three years. They ensure a concentrated supply of water to the root ball, preventing the trees from suffering drought stress. This increases the likelihood that the new planting will establish successfully.

Healthy trees on the Onderwijsboulevard

The water reservoirs around the trees have now been removed, as they have fulfilled their function. The young trees received a good start and have since grown into fine specimens. In summer, the trees create a shaded environment for students, residents and visitors. In addition, they contribute to the green ambitions of the municipality of ’s‑Hertogenbosch.
