Havenkade, Elburg (2015): root guidance prevents root heave for 10 years

The Havenkade in Elburg forms the connection between the historic fortress and the old fishing harbour. Today, it is a lively area with hospitality venues, events and berths for leisure yachts. In 2015, the Tree Root Guiding (TRG) root guidance system was applied to the trees along the quay. Ten years later, no root heave is visible, ensuring the quay remains green, safe and future-proof.

The Havenkade in Elburg forms a transition between the historic fortress and the old fishing harbour. Today, mainly leisure yachts moor here, while the quay and the adjacent square provide space for hospitality venues, events and a vibrant meeting place by the water. The Norway maples planted along the quay can cause significant root heave. A solution was sought to prevent root heave in the future.

In 2015, the Tree Root Guiding (TRG) root guidance system was applied on the Havenkade to prevent tree roots from lifting the paving. Tree Root Guiding ensures that tree roots first grow downwards in a controlled manner, well below the paving, and then continue growing horizontally beneath the panel. In this way, the roots remain at a safe depth, the paving stays intact and the trees retain their stability at the same time.

Applying root guidance in 2015 proved to be a smart choice, as more than 10 years later there is still no sign of root heave on the Havenkade. This keeps the area beautifully green and future-proof for the years to come!
