Redevelopment of Aarau–Buchs–Suhr with TreeParker for sustainable street trees

More space for trees, traffic and quality of life in the public realm

The redevelopment of Aarau–Buchs–Suhr combines modern transport infrastructure with sustainable greening of the public realm. For the new street trees, the TreeParker system by GreenMax was selected, creating optimal growing conditions beneath paving without compromising load-bearing capacity or functionality. The result is a greener streetscape, a longer lifespan for the trees and a future-proof design of the public realm.

Project details

Redevelopment of Buchser-/ Suhrer-/Tramstrasse

The major redevelopment project for the cantonal roads between Aarau, Buchs and Suhr focuses on a modern, safe and sustainable transport infrastructure. The redevelopment is better aligned with the daily use of the street. Pedestrians and cyclists are given more space, public transport operates more efficiently and the surroundings become more inviting for people to spend time in. The redevelopment creates a better balance between traffic, public use and greenery within the streetscape.

Trees in the TreeParker system

An important part of the redevelopment is the planting of new street trees. Species suited to the urban climate have been selected, including nettle trees, columnar English oaks, silver limes and disease-resistant elms. To provide these trees with suitable growing conditions within the paving, the TreeParker system has been installed. The underground soil cell system provides sufficient space for root growth and improved access to water and oxygen. At the same time, the surface above ground remains suitable for traffic, giving the trees a sustainable growing environment within the urban space. In addition, the TreeParker system is equipped with Tree Root Guiding panels, ensuring that tree roots do not cause root heave and that the paving remains intact.

The redevelopment of Aarau–Buchs–Suhr has resulted in a visible improvement to the living environment. The street has become greener, clearer and more pleasant for users and local residents. The new trees provide shade, cooling and an attractive streetscape, while contributing to greater biodiversity in the city. Thanks to the TreeParker system, the trees can develop healthily, which extends their lifespan and reduces long-term maintenance costs. The project demonstrates how smart infrastructure and urban greenery can work together to create a future-proof public realm.
