Wilhelminatoren, Valkenburg: Vulcan Earth Anchors stabilise embankment after collapse of the tower

After the collapse of the Wilhelminatoren, an embankment on the site was also found to be unstable, making stabilisation necessary for site safety. Vulcan Earth Anchors in combination with erosion mats were applied to reinforce the embankment and provide immediate stability. Thanks to this solution, the embankment remains safe and reliably in place even under heavy loads and rainfall.

In 2025, the Wilhelminatoren in Valkenburg collapsed, presumably as a result of structural weakening and deferred maintenance. This led to significant attention for the Wilhelminatoren site. Inspections showed that not only the tower itself had issues, but that the embankment on which it stood had also become unstable. To prevent further risks, the embankment on the Wilhelminatoren site had to be stabilised. This was necessary to ensure the long-term safety of visitors and the surrounding area.

Vulcan Earth Anchors of the AS50 and AS30 types were installed in combination with erosion mats to reinforce the embankment. The anchors are placed through both the mat and the soil and open underground, securing themselves firmly in the subsoil. The erosion mat protects the surface against slippage and provides a good base for vegetation. Once the anchors are tensioned, they pull the mat tightly against the embankment, immediately creating a solid connection and instant stability.

The embankment on the Wilhelminatoren site has now been stabilised for the long term. Thanks to the use of Vulcan Earth Anchors in combination with erosion mats, the subsoil remains reliably in place, even during heavy rainfall and erosion pressure. The construction prevents new movements and increases site safety.
